Stealth photography
-
I spend a LOT of time on public transportation. I use the subway, streetcar, and bus system and actually really enjoy it! I find it rather relaxing, since I don’t have to focus on anything, don’t need to stress about traffic or distractions. I just listen to music, read, and watch people.
Actually, just between you and me, I have a secret hobby. I hold my phone in front of me as if I’m listening to music or surfing the web, and actually (shhh!) I take pictures of people.
Why on earth would I take pictures of strangers? I’m not sure! Partly because it’s fun being sneaky about it (really, they have no idea), and also, I truly enjoy capturing moments.
Like shy love:

And see, this gal’s got her own stealth moves… using her sunglasses to be able to stare at anybody without them knowing. She’s probably staring right at me; but little does she know, I’m snapping photos of her.

And this girl was standing so close to me in the doorway of the subway. I couldn’t help but be fascinated at her nails, and how high her skirt is hiked up. *snap*

Here’s a good one – this woman was reading the Bible next to me. Neat! But wait, she’s hiding it behind another book! I don’t know if that’s funny or sad. Probably a bit of both.

But what I love most of all is how many people read! It’s incredible!

My students have mentioned too, how impressed they are with the number of people taking out books, magazines or newspapers to read on their daily commutes.

The Metro is a daily newspaper that’s free at all subway stations and all around the city. It’s not the best quality, but it’s still young, and has improved even in the last year. It gets people reading and interested – that’s great!

Look at this – all of them are engrossed in something.

It’s inspiring!

I also love to see what people are reading while I take transit. It looks like people read a lot more there, while commuting, than they do here?

hehe! I laughed at the lady with the fingernails and skirt…I can JUST see you trying non-chalantly to look at her, and yet not look at her. Of course you know the people standing behind you saw that you took her picture…

El: oh no, I’m always aware of who is behind me… and usually it’s nobody. In that picture I’m leaning against the one wall at the train car entrance, and she’s leaning against the other. Getting photos secretly is quite a procedure! :D

I’m also one of the reader (I,m actually reading Kellerman’s “Bones” like one of the guys in your pictures!). It’s basically my only chance to reader, my schedule is crazy these days. I think it’s also a way to ignore the noise, other people etc.
Your phone camera is pretty good! I tried snapping pics with my Blackberry but they make me cringe. For me, it’s Nikon D60 or nothing

Hey, this was cool!! Look at all those people engrossed in their reading, though, and totally IGNORING all the people around them. They could be chatting :-) AND I challenge you to snap pictures of people kntiting – ok, crafting of any kind :-)

I came here via Zhu’s blog… I also live in Toronto, and I’ll (hopefully) be visiting Turkey for the first time in June. I plan to venture into Eastern Turkey. (The fascination started when I lived with a Turkish boyfriend many moons ago.)
I also shoot random sneaky photos with my phone or whatever’s handy on transit; the TTC is a goldmine for photo ops.
I know what it’s like to repatriate (although my absence was not as long as yours), it was rather depressing at the beginning. So I have a lot of empathy for immigrants, also because I immigrated as a child and I witnessed what my parents went through.
If you enjoy photowalks, I sometimes organise them from time to time and I’m involved in the local Couchsurfing community.
